A Day to Remember Events

a day to remember eventsDanaea Li Photography

Tell us about A Day to Remember Events?
A Day to Remember Events is a full service event company offering a variety of services. We offer event coordination (full planning, week-of coordination & coaching sessions), décor services with full setup & takedown, DJ services and photobooth rentals.

We price all of our services separately, as some clients may not need all of the services we offer. But those who book us know that their wedding is in good hands. It makes things a bit easier on a bride & groom to have a “one stop shop” with experienced vendors.

What inspired you start "A Day to Remember Events" and pursue wedding planning and decor?
We are a husband & wife team! I (Candice) started A Day to Remember in 2006 providing event planning & décor services. I had been working for a wedding planner for five years prior to that and I loved everything about weddings. As an overly-organized person in my every day life, it only made sense that I had a job where I could use that to my ability. I love schedules, floor plans and everything else that helps to make an event run smoothly! Since a wedding is such an important day in somebody’s lives, I want to ensure that things go exactly as planned. There is nothing more exciting to me than a wedding running on schedule!

The creative side of me was intrigued and inspired by event décor & design. So incorporating that into the company allowed me to express my creativity and give clients a wedding that truly reflects them. I love the challenge of making sure a wedding fits the bride & grooms style. There is nothing we can’t do!

A few years after starting the business my husband (Kevin) jumped on board and we began offering DJ services & photobooth rentals. Kevin has an extensive background in live sound, audio/visual and electrical. He also DJ’d weddings & events for other DJ companies at the time, so it only made sense to include him on the ADTR roster! By combining forces, we were able to give our clients a wedding they would never forget!

We now have eight team members that are the face of ADTR. Every one of our team members are passionate about weddings and truly enjoy their work!

What would you recommend for newly engaged couples looking for a wedding planner?
• Do your research and look at testimonials & reviews.
• Ensure they do it full time. You need someone that is professional and will reply to you promptly during your engagement.
• Don’t book whoever is least expensive. Often the least expensive planner is the least experienced.
• Book a planner that you mesh well with. Personality matters so ensure that you have a good connection with the planner you choose.
• You need to be able to trust your planner immensely, so check out their quality of work. Ensure you have a professional you can count on.

What advice do you have when it comes to wedding decor?
When choosing the style for your wedding, do what reflects you two. Don’t use burlap and mason jars just because it’s trendy and you saw it all over pinterest. Choose the style based on the kind of couple you are. Are you a casual couple who likes to hike & camp? Do you prefer nice restaurants and luxurious hotels? Do you go antique shopping in your spare time? Think about all of this when planning your wedding décor. Make note of what defines you as a couple and incorporate that into your wedding.

Also think about your home décor. Is it casual and woodsy? Is it fancy with chandeliers & high end furniture? Is it modern with straight lines and bold colours? I’ve noticed that the style of peoples wedding often reflects the style that they decorate their home. So when meeting with a decorator bring some key words with you about the wedding you want, such as “bold, elegant, vintage, modern, clean, neutral, high end, comfortable, woodsy, over the top, etc.” Also think about what kind of vibe you want your wedding to have and how you want your guests to feel at your wedding.

What is it about A Day to Remember Events that makes it unique?
We’ve created a company full of energy, ambition and professionalism. Our years of experience organizing a variety of events and planning numerous weddings set us apart from others in the same field. Every team member on the ADTR team are passionate about what they do and their work truly reflects that.

We closely monitor the latest trends in décor, art, style food, entertainment and always make sure no matter how small or big an event may be, it’s our job to pay attention to detail, problem solve & be there for our client every step of the way.

What wedding or bridal advice do you have for our Vancouver Brides?
1. Stay true to yourself

2. Hire a planner. Yes, I’m biased, but having a professional will help you stay on budget (and even save you money), keep you on track during the planning process to alleviate stress and ensure that you, your family & your friends don’t have to do any work on your wedding day. When a couple spends $20,000+ on one day, it’s important to hire at least a day-of coordination to implement all of the things that you have been planning for the past year or so. Keep in mind that if you don’t have it in your budget to hire a planner for full planning, you can choose to go with a week-of coordination package or coaching sessions to ensure that everything runs smoothly on your wedding day.

3. Involve the groom. Try to do things together, but don’t get frustrated if your fiancé isn’t super keep on getting involved. Give him tasks that he might enjoy and ask his for opinion as you go.

4. Be nice to those offering help. Although you might not want it, many people will want to help. Try to take as much help as you can, even if it seems like you have plenty of time to get things done. Often brides are rushed to get DIY projects done last minute, which causes unnecessary stress.

5. Figure out your budget before starting the planning. This is so important, more important than couples realize. I know it might be hard to know what everything will cost in the beginning, but know what maximum number you want to stay within. The last thing you want is to break the bank and start your marriage in debt. Be clear with your vendors on what you want to spend on their services and they can work with you to suggest things to stay within it, or let you know if you are out of range for the wedding that you want.

6. Be selective with your wedding party (choose >4 bridesmaids or groomsmen if possible … it means less issues, is less expensive for you and is more of an honour for them)

7. Figure out your priorities. Maybe the groom wants a live band and that is most important to him. Maybe food is the most important to you, or having an open bar is important for your guests. Try to make your guests the priority as you are inviting them to celebrate with you. Take care of them as if you were inviting them into your home.

What is your favorite 2015 wedding trend or stand out wedding element this year?
There are so many good ones, it’s hard to choose! Here are my top favourite wedding trends for 2015:

Glamour & Luxe
Although rustic chic is still in style, it has recently overwhelmed the wedding population. Many people are getting fancy instead, after all, how many other events in your life can do up as formal as a wedding? Many couples are incorporating glamorous elements into their wedding such as sequins linen, formal bridesmaid dresses, elaborate cakes, high end shoes, tulle bridal gowns & custom stationery. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a sucker for some sparkle!

Bars
I’m love a good bar. And I don’t just mean drinks, but any kind of bar that your guests might enjoy… a candy bar, cigar bar, whisky bar, champagne bar, cocktail bar. There are endless ideas out there! Find something that you and your guests will enjoy.

Food Trucks
This is such a fun element and guests absolutely love it! I had one couple get a donair truck at midnight for guests to grab one on their way out their door. We’ve also had ice cream trucks arrive after the ceremony on a hot summer day. There is no limit to what you can do and it’s well worth the money as this is something that guests won’t forget!

Your favourite part of a wedding?
My favourite part of a wedding is when I send the bride down the aisle. Emotions are running high for everyone and it’s such an amazing feeling! Of course my other favourite part is when we make the reception run on schedule! ☺

Your favourite wedding movie?
Father of the Bride… hands down. Franck, the wedding planner from that film, is my hero (he’s so hilarious!!!). That role was based on real life celebrity wedding planner, Kevin Lee. I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Lee at a wedding convention in Las Vegas back in 2012! (see attached photo of us!) The movie Bridesmaids is a close second!

Sail Away with Me

"Living on the West Coast, I was thrilled to shoot something that matches the stunning ocean backdrop here. We tied in sea glass tones in green and blue to further incorporate the surrounding landscape. The shoot took place on the roof of "The Wedding Yacht" and the wind added to the romance with the light chiffon fabrics, and models hair blowing almost sideways." - Angela Waterberg, Blush Photography
